Chinese vs ABC

I'll be driving all da way back 2 my hometown to visit my grandparents tomorrow.I'm talking about visiting da cemetery.Dun think nonsense,or else it'll sound creepy.Insomnia is bothering me lately,so i dun wanna make it worse. It's a 5-hour ride from kuching to sarikei. With my superb driving skill which my mum is alwez amazed about, 5 hours driving is like a piece of cake for me.Malay calls it kacang putih.Hokkien calls it sap sap sui.Foochow calls it what?No idea.
My grandpa passed away b4 i was borne, when my dad was 20+. My grandma passed away when i's in primary school due to pancreatic carcinoma.According to medical books, it's a really rare Ca.However, it happened n the only sign my dad saw accidentally was jaundice (which tells us that it's already invaded her liver n it's too late).Healthy look deceive people.dun judge a book by its cover, friends.
Since I have nothing 2 do, i decided 2 follow my parents this time. It's been years since i did that.honestly, i've almost forgotten about this chinese tradition, which is a shame.
Few days ago, I couldn't wait for sunday 2 come so that i could go 2 my hometown 2 meet up with some of my old friends. However, the schedule is tight coz my dad is a busy man.I was kinda upset coz i knew i wouldn't have time 2 hang out with my old frens.
"Dad, u guys go 2 da cemetery la. i myself go c my frens." (of coz it's in foochow.i can't possibly spell foochow n nobody will understand also)
"R u sure?u haven't been there for years."
"Yea.But i haven't seen my frens for years too."
My bro suddenly said , "r ur frens or our grandparents more important?"
"....."
I was speechless.I was neither angry nor upset. At that very moment, i thought he's right.I's ashamed of myself as a chinese.
Visiting the cemetery of those who had passed away on Qing Ming Jie is a chinese tradition (I dun know what Qing Ming Jie is called in english).Whether or not we're christian, buddhist, free thinker, or a believer of black metal or illuminatus, we r still chinese.it's in our blood. It's a Chinese way to show respect to those who r no longer living. Without them, who r we?Where r we?Dun tell me ur mum is conceived by holy spirit. That will be da 2nd coming of Christ. I am a christian myself, i believe in God.But i strongly believe that as chinese, these simple traditions must be kept generation after generation. That makes us Chinese.
No doubt there's a lot of ABC in town these days. ABC @ american-born-chinese, means english is their mother tongue. Most of them, i can say, have already become an american, although some prefer British accent. I'm not talking about ABC who don't speak chinese.I'm talking about those who dun know who exactly Chinese are. It's not surprising if they dun know that we shouldn't sweep our floor on da 1st day of Chinese new year. It's a shame. It's not their fault.I personally prefer to blame their parents. What are the parents doing?Honestly, i really respect a lot of ABC who try very hard 2 learn 2 speak chinese when they're mature enuff 2 understand the importance of chinese language. I'm very proud of u guys, well done.Speaking our language is the simplest thing we can do 2 keep the spirit alive.
I'm very excited about tmorrow. This time,it's not becoz i'm gonna see my frens. It's becoz i'm gonna recover da spirit that i've neglected for years becoz i couldn't come back home for this special day.
