Football owned me.
This photo was taken 2 days after I sprained my right ankle. The swelling has come down a lot so it doesn't look that noobie anymore.
I sprained both my ankles 50 million times each but I did absolutely nothing about it. This time was quite bad so I decided to look for some advice since I'm a noobie medical student.
Screw my GP. I did not even know where his clinic was. So I went to my hospital's walk-in centre.
Specialist nurse (SN) : So what's wrong?
Noob : I sprained my ankle.
SN : U gotta learn.
Noob : -_-
SN : Did u do anything about it?
Noob : No.
SN : Did u take any painkiller? Ibuprofen? Paracetamol?
Noob : No.
SN : Why not?
Noob : coz... I can stand the pain?
SN : -_-
Noob : Do u wanna have a look at it? It's really swollen.
SN : Yes, of course. Remove ur shoes n socks pls.
Stroking and squeezing my ankle like a pro. Damn sien actually.
Advice :
- Keep your ankle raised with your foot higher than your bottom to help stop swelling. (What, u expect me to DotA with my foot on the table?)
- Use ice-packs (a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a damp towel will do) for 10 mins, 4-6 times a day to help stop pain, swelling and bruising. (I should have done that the moment I got injured)
- Take tablets such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to relieve the pain ( Paracetamol 500mg, 1 or 2 tables 4 times daily ; ibuprofen 400 mg, 1 table 3 times daily with or after food)
- Rest for the 1st 24 hours after injury. The next day try 2 walk with even strides (heel first, then toe) and put as much weight on your foot as your ankle will let you. (Walan I can't even put 1g of pressure on my ankle)
- Try to exercise for 10 mins every hour, especially after you have used ice. This will help to stop your ankle from becoming stiff. (-_-)
Ok. I really did get some ibuprofen from Sainsbury. Being paranoid (medical student ma), I know NSAIDs screw my stomach and kidneys. So I took only 200mg once a day, which worked like a miracle. I did not feel any pain for the whole day n I could walk around like a pro.
One useful advice I got was that I should not bandage my ankle. I should let it move freely and put pressure on it instead so it would recover more quickly. People (including me) tend to think that we should immobilize it but it's a wrong thinking.
So, imma PRO now.
